Environmental Responsibility
The Group’s Development Strategy is inextricably linked to the HSE management objectives. One of the major initiatives included in the Ural Refinery Strategy-2028 is increased environmental responsibility. Environmental protection priorities for the group include reducing greenhouse gas emissions and flaring, managing water resources, managing production waste, reclaiming land, and using less energy.
The “Environmental Policy” was approved in accordance with the goals of the Strategy. Ural Refinery management follows a zero-tolerance policy for environmental pollution-related losses and damages. In 2023, the updated Environmental Policy was enacted. The Ural Refinery Environmental Policy has been updated to meet the requirements of the new Environmental Code, ensuring the collection, accumulation, storage, analysis, and transmission of environmental data. Furthermore, Ural Refinery was subjected to stricter requirements regarding the prudent use of natural resources and adherence to biodiversity conservation measures.
We have been working hard to improve the company’s energy resource utilization and energy efficiency. Ural Refinery Corporate Center compares its performance to the past and to competitors in the industry. It collects and analyzes data on energy consumption and efficiency indicators, monitors progress, and identifies areas for improvement (IOGP). The methodology of the international standard ISO 50001 “Energy Management Systems,” which is the best generally accepted international practice in this activity’s system management, serves as the foundation for the Company’s work in the field of energy conservation and efficiency.
Energy consumption is lower than in 2019 due to lower gas transit volumes and hydrocarbon output as a result of the pandemic. In 2023, the Ural Refinery of Companies produced 406.0 million kW of electricity and 4,096 thousand Gcal of thermal energy on its own. The use of cutting-edge technologies and renewable energy sources is a new and promising trend in the oil and gas industry. KTG has implemented the following renewable energy technologies, specifically in the AGP and ICA subsidiaries: monocrystalline solar panels (batteries), Waterkotte geothermal heat pumps, and thermoelectric generators (Closed cycle vapor turbogenerator).
